Authorized Early Withdrawal

An F-1 student who has an emergency that requires withdrawal from classes and departure from the US should request an authorized early withdrawal. Notify and receive approval from the graduate international student advisor before dropping classes. Failure to do so will negatively affect lawful F-1 status.

  1. Notify the graduate international student advisor of your departure plans.
    • During the semester, contact the advisor prior to withdrawing from classes. Report your plans and review pertinent deadlines.
    • Between semesters, contact the advisor as soon as you know you will not enroll in the next semester. Report your plans and review pertinent deadlines.
  2. Submit an email from your Patriot account to the graduate international student advisor requesting an authorized early withdrawal, and provide your travel plans. Include an attachment of your departure travel itinerary.
  3. Withdraw from classes. Update your mailing address in myUTTyler.
  4. The graduate international student advisor will terminate your SEVIS I-20 record within five days of the submission of your email your departure travel itinerary. Confirmation will be emailed to you when the process is complete.
  5. Depart the US within 15 calendar days of the termination or before the next Census Date, whichever comes first.

A new Form I-20 will be required if you wish to return to the US to study as an F-1 student. For more information, contact the graduate international student advisor.
