University retirees are encouraged to join the new UT Tyler Retirees’ Association, Joe Vorsas, associate vice president for human resources, announced.

“We hope the UT Tyler Retirees’ Association will be a good way for our retirees to stay connected to each other and to the university they worked so hard to help build,” Vorsas said.

The organization was created earlier this month with about 40 charter members. Benefits include an annual faculty/staff parking pass for $20, special membership to the Herrington Patriot Center, courtesy library card for the Robert R. Muntz Library and special discounts on season tickets to events at the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Members meet on a quarterly basis in the UT Tyler University Center. The next meeting is 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in the faculty/staff dining room of the center.

Social media pages and an association website are planned as ways for members to stay connected. The UT Tyler Office of Human Resources officials also have offered to arrange special programs at future meetings including retiree financial planning and benefits/insurance information of interest to retirees, Vorsas added.

Dr. Gayle Varnell, retired nursing faculty member, serves as association chair.

Any possible dues are yet to be determined.
