UT Tyler chemistry lecturer Lauren Johnson received the 2019 Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Texas System Board of Regents. The award recognizes exceptional educators who best exemplify excellence, innovation and commitment to student success.

“Teaching a variety of chemistry courses, Mrs. Johnson is a very versatile educator and is committed to delivering the best possible approach to teaching,” said Dr. Tanya Shtoyko, chair of the UT Tyler Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “She seizes every opportunity to guide and inspire her students to do their best.”

A UT Tyler alumna, Johnson has served the chemistry and biochemistry department since 2014. She is an active member of the American Chemical Society and encourages students not only through her teaching, but also through community involvement and as an ACS student chapter advisor.

“My main motivation is the moment when a student realizes they can master a subject they previously thought impossible,” she said. “If I can go a step further and help a student to not only master chemistry but to also become passionate about science, that is the icing on the cake to me.”
