New Pre-Med Academy

University Offers Comprehensive Advising for Medical School Acceptance

October 30, 2019

The University of Texas at Tyler is expanding its pre-medical education initiatives with the launch of the new Pre-Med Academy this fall.

The University has historically produced graduates well-prepared for the rigors of medical school. Many have gone on to become successful practitioners including anesthesiologists, surgeons, neuroscientists, radiologists and pediatricians. The Pre-Med Academy is designed to increase the number of students accepted into medical school and improve the quality of their readiness for medical school studies.

"In addition to providing excellent pre-medical advising as we've done in the past, the Pre-Med Academy will serve as a centralized location for our students to receive both advising and support services for each phase of their undergraduate education and the medical school application process,'' said Dr. Rachel Mason, Pre-Med Academy director and assistant chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

"Students who apply to UT Tyler and express an interest in preparing for medical school will be automatically referred to us once they are accepted to the University,'' she said. "We will reach out to them and encourage them to register for the academy to begin the advising process.''

Each student in the academy will be given milestones to achieve toward medical school acceptance, including required coursework and grade point averages, community service involvement, leadership development activities and job shadowing hours.

Informative events will be held regularly, including workshops preparing students for job shadowing and an MCAT Boot Camp providing intensive preparation the Medical College Admission Test.

The academy also will offer programs to encourage East Texas high school students to consider careers in medicine, including a summer Pre-Med Academy Camp with presentations by Tyler-area physicians, visits to local medical facilities, sessions introducing students to research, and other activities.
