Building Excellence

Honor Society Recognized for Community Service Efforts

studentThe College of Engineering’s “Gamma III” student chapter of the Sigma Lambda Chi, an international construction management honor society, received a 2021 Silver Award for community service endeavors completed amid the pandemic. This is the second consecutive year that the chapter has been recognized.

“For our student chapter to be recognized so highly during the first two years of its existence just speaks volumes of the men and women who make up this group,” said UT Tyler instructor Joe Boylan, the chapter’s faculty sponsor. “I’m so proud of them and the work that they accomplished this past year to help both the community and their fellow classmates.”

The International Sigma Lambda Chi Honor Society is the lone, worldwide honor society that supports, recognizes and rewards excellence in construction management and construction engineering. SLC annually reviews community service projects performed by chapters and selects a handful for recognition at the bronze, silver and gold level.

Among endeavors, UT Tyler’s chapter helped build a house for Habitat for Humanity of Smith County in Tyler. The group also implemented a tutoring program in which any UT Tyler construction management major could peer-call honor society members for help with online lessons or homework.

Past UT Tyler chapter member Hunter Busby of Forney called being a part of the organization a “wonderful privilege.”

“With a group of amazing students along with great faculty leadership, I was proud to represent the construction management honor society and department,” said Busby, a UT Tyler May 2021 graduate.

The chapter’s upcoming plans include a community project for the COE, Boylan added. For more information, email Boylan at jboylan@uttyler.edu
