University’s Honor a Nurse Campaign Exceeds Goal, Establishes Fund

Students and faculty in sim labLast year, the UT Tyler Office of University Advancement introduced the Honor a Nurse campaign in recognition of the World Health Organization’s “International Year of the Nurse.”

Individuals in the community could say “thank you” to a special nurse in their lives by making a gift of $20.20 to support the UT Tyler Honored Nurses Scholarship Fund, a quasi-endowment that would provide scholarship support to eligible School of Nursing students.

Because to the tremendous support of donors, the office was able to meet their $10,000 goal and establish the fund.

“The CNHS was honored to be a part of this campaign,” said Dr. Barbara Haas, interim dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Mary Coulter Dowdy Distinguished Professor in Nursing. “The endowment that has been created as a result will impact students for years to come, helping support those who have the heart and passion to become part of the incredible profession of nursing.”

Fun Fact: In early 2019 – long before the COVID pandemic emerged – the World Health Organization named 2020 the “International Year of the Nurse and Midwife” to mark the bicentenary of the birth of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. WHO also made the designation to recognize the critical contribution both professions make to global health.
