Ashiru Admires SON’s Caring Community

AshiruBorn in Nigeria and raised in Mesquite, Texas, Jarinat Ashiru found an unapparelled nursing program, unique scenery and unmatched faculty at The University of Texas at Tyler. While obtaining her prerequisites at another institution, Ashiru learned about the UT Tyler School of Nursing online and applied “on a whim.” Ashiru was accepted, and she now has her sights set on becoming a travel nurse.

But the UT Tyler senior didn’t always know if the nursing field was the right career choice for her. Before arriving at UT Tyler, she interned at Shanghai General Hospital in China, and the experience solidified her decision.

“Both UT Tyler and the SON have taught me to strive and never settle in life,” said Ashiru, who was one of many UT Tyler students who assisted with the COVID vaccine clinics in Tyler. “Here at UT Tyler, you have a lot of opportunities and resources to become the individual you wish to be.”

Ashiru can’t imagine choosing any other career path and is thankful for the UT Tyler nursing faculty who nurtured and prepared her for career success. “They have truly helped me unlock an upgraded version of myself, and I cannot wait to continue to see my growth,” she said.

Alongside aspirations of becoming a travel nurse, Ashiru plans to further her education and become a certified nurse practitioner. And with the taste for international travel, she also wants to see all eight Wonders of the World, an accomplishment her father once referenced.

“I've successfully seen the Great Wall of China – so seven more to go,” she said with a smile.
