College Introduces New Career Success Coach

BrockmanNyree Brockman is the new career success coach for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. A Southern California native, Brockman joined UT Tyler’s staff in April.

She previously was a work-based learning coordinator for six years at a public charter school. There, she created programming to help at-risk students achieve college and career success. Brockman also has held positions managing customer service programs or growing talent at various companies including Old Navy, Toyota and LensCrafters. She is excited to use her talents to enhance the college’s career success programming.

In the following question and answer session, learn more about her and why she chose to join UT Tyler.

For those who may not know, can you describe what a career success coach does? What is a typical workday like?

A career success coach is here to connect students to their dream careers through employer engagement, resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, mock interviews, job searches and applications, and even career skills assessments. Our job is to help each student get a job! There is no real typical day, but the one constant is helping students daily.

Why are you passionate about this position here at UT Tyler? What are you looking forward to the most?

I have always been passionate about individuals' growth and promotion. I want the best for everyone around me and for them to find their passion, success and happiness in what they do. There is no better way to do that than be in the thick of the decision-making process and to support them through that. I am looking forward to helping each nursing or health professions student reach their goals.

I understand last month’s helicopter flight nurse presentation served as the kick-off “Career Spotlight” event. Can you share a little insight on what a student might learn if they attend one of these events, and why you felt it was important to start something like this for the college?

The Career Spotlight events were a brainstorming idea in a meeting with some CNHS colleagues. We talked through some ideas, and we thought how great it could be to “spotlight” different types of careers in nursing or health sciences that would also host a “wow” factor as well. The helicopter was the “wow” factor for the first one, but really, this is a great way for our career partners to meet with students and for students to talk directly with the flight nurses to see what an actual day looks like. This really is the best way for students to find their path and passion. I thought it was important for the college to expose this large student population to the many career options that are out there. It is a great way to get students engaged, especially after this last year.

What others are planned?

We are working through some ideas, but we want to bring some of the following: surgery, major league sports teams, ER clinics, cruise ship nurses, athletic training and so much more.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I love to cook, bake, watch my son run like a crazy man outside and spend time with my family.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I love working with people and helping them to reach their greatest potential! I invite our students to come see me, make an appointment or just email! I am open to ideas and suggestions, and generally love to just chat with people.
