UT Tyler University Academy Recognizes First Graduates

The University of Texas at Tyler has announced that it will graduate its first class of University Academy seniors on Saturday, June 1.

Offering grades K-12, The University Academy is a state-funded charter school founded in 2012. The University Academy specializes in STEM education.

"Increasing the number of STEM prepared students in the East Texas region is critical to the economic vitality of the region," said Dr. Ross Sherman, dean of the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology. "The University Academy addresses that need. We are extremely proud of these outstanding seniors and their scholastic achievements. We look forward to the collegiate and professional career achievements ahead of them."

Forty-two students, representing UA campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine, will graduate at 10:30 a.m. June 1 in the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center. UT Tyler President Michael Tidwell will give the commencement address.

"Scholastic data regarding our first graduating class is impressive and supports our mission to develop students who are prepared to pursue careers in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics fields," said Dr. Jo Ann Simmons, UA superintendent. "They will represent the University Academy well in their future endeavors."

Some of the scholastic achievements for the UA class of 2019 include:

  • 42 seniors completed 1,541 college semester credit hours
  • 32 seniors are Dual Credit Scholars earning at Least 36 university semester credit hours
  • 35 seniors earned a STEM endorsement

Operated by the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology, University Academy currently enrolls more than 750 students.
