The University of Texas at Tyler announced that it offers a Sunrise Tai Chi program for the general public.

The free, hour-long program is held at 7 a.m. every Tuesday morning at the Patriot Plaza and continues through Tuesday, Nov. 19. Internationally renowned Tai Chi expert Dr. Yong “Tai” Wang, dean of the UT Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences, leads the sessions.

Tai Chi is an ancient mind-body exercise in China and combines martial art movement with circulation, breathing and stretching techniques. Participants learn Easy Tai Chi 10 Forms (ETC10). The format of the class includes warm-up, teaching and demonstration; and practice of ETC10. Space is limited, and no registration is required. To join, email Wang, ywang@uttyler.edu.

“Specific health benefits may include alleviating anxiety and reducing stress; improving cardiopulmonary function and balance; and increasing flexibility and muscle strength,” said Wang, who has led Tai Chi classes for more than 20 years.

Participants are asked to wear loose clothing and consider their choice of footwear. The inclement weather location will be the UT Tyler Jones Gym, Room 122.
