The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that three students in its Pre-Med Academy have been selected to participate in a state medical school preparatory program.

The students are scholars in the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP). The program was created by the Texas Legislature to support and encourage highly qualified, economically disadvantaged Texas resident students pursuing a career in medicine.

“We are very excited to have these students selected,” said Rachel Mason, PhD, UT Tyler associate professor of chemistry and chief health professions adviser. “This is the largest cohort of JAMP applicants ever selected from UT Tyler. Traditionally the university is allotted a maximum of two scholars, so to have this unprecedented cohort is a testament to the quality of our students.”

UT Tyler JAMP scholars are Connor Crowe, Jacksonville biology major and Presidential Fellow; Wyatt Schaefer, Marietta biochemistry major and Honors Student; and Bethany Woolman, Pasadena music major and Presidential Fellow.

Josue Gaona, Tyler biology major, is an alternate who will advance if a slot becomes available due to resignation or dismissal of another candidate in this class before Gaona begins his senior year.

Funded through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, JAMP is a state-wide collaboration between 11 Texas medical schools and 70 public and private undergraduate institutions.

JAMP program provides:

  • Undergraduate scholarships and stipends
  • Summer internships
  • Hands-on experience through clinical enrichment opportunities
  • Comprehensive, multi-phase MCAT preparation program
  • Dedicated mentoring
  • Guaranteed admission to a participating Texas medical school if all criteria are met
  • Scholarships to attend medical school
