The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Mathematics has received funding for a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program to mentor students and encourage them to pursue advanced degrees.

The National Science Foundation awarded UT Tyler a three-year research grant for $311,154 to support the summer program, which will be headed by mathematics professors David Milan, PhD, principal investigator, and Christy Graves, PhD, co-principal investigator.

“We are excited to offer this opportunity for students to delve into research and discovery,’’ Milan said. “The REU is designed to give students an introduction to research that will help prepare and encourage them to pursue PhDs in mathematics.’’

The program is open to U.S. students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in mathematics. Ten participants will be selected each summer, beginning this year, through an application process. A primary goal of the program is to increase participation of underrepresented groups, including women, Hispanic students and first-generation college students, in mathematical research and graduate training.

Students will spend eight weeks in daily research with faculty on the UT Tyler campus. They also will write papers suitable for publication and will have opportunities to present their work at national meetings.

Along with Milan and Graves, faculty mentors will include Katie Anders, PhD, Kassie Archer, PhD, Madeline Dawsey, PhD, and Joseph Vandehey, PhD.
