The University of Texas at Tyler announced that Landry Smith of Aledo has been named a 2022 history scholar. A UT Tyler junior history major with a pre-law minor, Smith received the Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The UT Tyler Department of History presents scholarships to declared history majors in recognition of excellent academic performance, and to encourage the study of history at the university.

This scholarship honors the memory of Frank H. Smyrl, PhD, founding department chair and first dean of the UT Tyler College of Liberal Arts, now known as the College of Arts and Sciences. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Smyrl, who is the chief benefactor of this award.

“I cannot understate my appreciation for the legacy of Dr. Frank Smyrl and his wife Mrs. Carolyn Smyrl,” said Smith. “My love for history has been deepened due to individuals like them and those within the history department and College of Arts and Sciences. I hope to represent these individuals and CAS well.”

A UT Tyler 2020-21 Presidential Honors Scholar, he served as the UT Tyler Student Government Association vice president and was recently named president-elect for the 2022-23 academic year. Smith will graduate in May 2023, and he plans to attend law school after graduation.

With a mission to improve educational and healthcare outcomes for East Texas and beyond, UT Tyler offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs to 10,000 students. UT Tyler recently merged with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (now known as UT Tyler Health Science Center). Through its alignment with UT Tyler Health Science Center (HSC) and UT Health East Texas, UT Tyler has unified these entities to serve Texas with quality education, cutting-edge research and excellent patient care.
