F-1 Student On-Campus Employment

A student who is maintaining F-1 status may work on-campus without additional authorization or approval from OIP up to a maximum of 19.5 hours per week during each Fall and Spring semesters. International students may work more than 19.5 hours during official university breaks, however, approval from the department is required and not guaranteed.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to work on-campus, an F-1 student: 

  • Must be in valid F-1 status.
  • Must have a valid, unexpired passport and UT Tyler I-20.
  • If transferring in from another school, must have completed the SEVIS transfer process.

Eligibility Expiration

On-campus work eligibility expires when any of the following occurs:

  • When a student completes their program of study (eligibility ends on the official end date of the semester).
  • On the day the student’s SEVIS record is transferred to another school.
  • If a student falls out of status.

    To maintain status, F-1 students must submit a request to work off-campus, or to work more than part-time on-campus during non-study periods.
