Maintaining F-1 Status
Requirements to Stay in Status
To maintain lawful status while in the U.S. as an F-1 student, you must abide by all the requirements and restrictions of your visa status. Failure to do so is a status violation and jeopardizes your ability to receive any F-1 student benefits that may interest you now or in the future, such as OPT or a driver's license.
It is thus to your benefit to be familiar with the main F-1 requirements. Click on a button in the menu of main F-1 requirements to the right to learn about a specific requirement in detail. If you are wondering whether you need permission for something and cannot find an answer here, please drop by during office hours or send an email.
In the event that your SEVIS record is terminated because you've been found guilty of a status violation, you will lose lawful status and any benefits afforded by your (former) F-1 status. You will also be considered unlawfully present and subject to deportation proceedings until you either a) leave the country, or b) apply for reinstatement to restore F-1 status and regain lawful presence.
