Message from the Interim Dean
Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy
Welcome to The Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy at UT Tyler!
The Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy was established to advance the public health and wellness of the citizens of East Texas through innovation and collaboration in pharmacy, education, scholarship, and advocacy. Our pioneer class of students enrolled in the fall semester of 2015, graduated in spring 2019, and entered the pharmaceutical profession with the knowledge and skills needed to establish meaningful careers in healthcare.
The Fisch College of Pharmacy’s Doctor of Pharmacy degree program uses a variety of teaching methods used, including Team-Based Learning, which emphasizes communication, critical thinking, and teamwork. Our methods cultivate skills invaluable to solving real-world problems that face patients and healthcare practitioners every day. The Fisch College of Pharmacy incorporates direct patient care experiences throughout our four-year program. Student pharmacists complete nearly 2,000 hours of pharmacy practice experiences while working alongside pharmacists, nurses, and physicians to provide care for patients in the community and hospital settings. The Fisch College of Pharmacy is the only pharmacy program in Texas that actively engages students in direct patient care experiences during their very first semester in the program.
We value our faculty and staff at the Fisch College of Pharmacy as one of our strongest assets of our program. The college is home to two academic departments: the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health Outcomes, and the Department of Clinical Sciences. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences currently consists of ten faculty members whose research interests range from discovering new drugs used to treat cancer to the neurological basis of drug dependency. The Department of Clinical Sciences currently includes sixteen faculty pharmacists with a variety of specialty practice areas encompassing ambulatory care, infectious disease, critical care, oncology, and internal medicine. Faculty in both departments actively teach within the program, sharing their knowledge and expertise directly with the student pharmacists. Additionally, over 700 practicing pharmacists representing nearly 600 practice sites in Texas work with the Fisch College of Pharmacy to train our student pharmacists during their direct patient care experiences.
W.T. Brookshire Hall, the home of the Fisch College of Pharmacy, was built in 2015 and is specifically designed with collaborate classroom and study spaces throughout the building. The building has abundant natural light and technology that facilitates the perfect environment for both individual and group learning. W.T. Brookshire Hall also houses collaborative research space which greatly augments the ability of our faculty to advance drug discovery, drug knowledge, and the treatment and prevention of diseases through translational research.
The Fisch College of Pharmacy is a part of the University of Texas at Tyler’s Health Sciences Center, which includes the UT Tyler School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Medical Biological Sciences, and School of Health Professions. TThrough its alignment with UT Tyler’s Health Science Center (HSC) and UT Health East Texas, UT Tyler has unified these entities to serve East Texas with quality education, cutting-edge research and excellent patient care. The variety of healthcare programs and patient care opportunities through our programs provides student pharmacists the chance to learn and train alongside other health professionals and healthcare students.
On behalf of the faculty, staff, and student pharmacists of the Fisch College of Pharmacy, I welcome you to join The University of Texas at Tyler, the UT Tyler Health Sciences Center, the Fisch College of Pharmacy family, and the profession of pharmacy!
Dr. Kathleen Snella, Pharm.D.
