Congratulations
Dr. May Abdelaziz, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health Outcomes in the Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy, was awarded a two-year new competing National Institutes of Health R21 grant on February 19, 2021 for her project entitled “Mechanistic Insights into VraS Mutations Linked to Bacterial Resistance.” Dr. Abdelaziz came to UT Tyler in June 2016 and teaches medicinal chemistry to pharmacy students and manages an interdisciplinary research lab. Her research area is centered around drug discovery and cellular interactions of kinases with a special focus on cancer and antibiotic resistance. Research interests include discovery and study of allosteric modulators, screening of chemical and natural products libraries, studying enzyme kinetics, mechanisms of inhibition and analysis of protein – protein interactions in cellular networks using biophysical techniques.
Dr. David Strong, Professor of English in the Department of Literature and Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded a one-year Open Education Resources grant supported by the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund. The grant funds will be used to redesign the ENGL 2322 (English Literature to the 1780s) course by incorporating portions of the required textbooks in a digital format and developing associated weekly course materials for online delivery. Dr. Strong teaches a wide variety of literature and composition courses and his publications focus on medieval dream visions and Shakespeare.

The memorial gardens at the School of Nursing buildings on the Longview and Tyler campuses will be beautified with monarch butterfly waystations this year. The Native Plant Society of Texas awarded separate “Bring Back the Monarchs to Texas” garden grants to both campuses. Dr. Katheryn Courville, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Sherry Howard, Director of the Longview University Center, were awarded the grant for the Longview campus, and Dr. Belinda Deal, Professor of Nursing was awarded the grant for the Tyler campus. The funds will be used to plant native nectar plants and milkweeds to support the spring and fall migrations of monarch butterflies.

Research Design and Data Analysis Lab
The Office of Research, Scholarship, and Sponsored Programs (ORSSP) is pleased to announce the establishment of the ORSSP Research Design and Data Analysis Lab. The mission of the ORSSP Research Design and Data Analysis Lab is to support research at the University of Texas at Tyler by providing students, faculty, and staff with expert guidance in and developing research designs and methods and conducting data analyses that are based on quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method approaches. We are grateful for the funding provided by the Office of the Provost, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Education & Psychology, College of Engineering, College of Nursing & Health Sciences, Fisch College of Pharmacy, and Soules College of Business.

Research Volunteers Needed!
Texas/Oklahoma Winter Storm Study Seeking Survey Participants
UT Tyler researchers are seeking participants who are at least 18 years of age or older and who lived in Texas or Oklahoma during the recent winter storms (February 14 to February 26, 2021) to take a 15-20 minute survey about their experiences with boil water notices. Participants are invited to take the survey March 9 - May 9, 2021.
STOP THE BLEED Training Program Seeking Volunteers
STOP THE BLEED is a free class that was designed by the American College of Surgeons
and others, to teach non-medical bystanders what to do in the event of a life-threatening
bleeding emergency (www.StopTheBleed.org). Our research team consists of UT Tyler faculty, staff and students. We are studying
how well participants retain knowledge and skills after taking the STOP THE BLEED
class.
Volunteers can sign up until May 5, 2021. The last class is being offered on May 7, 2021.

Internal Grants Program
Thirteen applications were received for the FY 2022 Internal Grants Program, down from previous years, but expected as more investigators receive awards, making them ineligible to apply again for two years. Proposals will be reviewed in April and awards announced in May, 2021.
Need Transcription Services?
The University of Texas at Tyler has a contract with TranscribeMe! for highly accurate transcription services at a $0.79 per minute rate. According to Dr. Melinda Hermanns and Dr. Mastel-Smith the submission process is easy because the service provides step-by-step screenshot instructions. After creating an individual account, select the ‘First Draft’ services and “Not Included’ for Speaker IDs and Time Stamps to ensure that a line will be skipped for each new speaker. There are pricier options available, so verify the rate before proceeding. Many thanks to Linda Friedemann for making this service possible.
East Texas Research Conference
The Office of Research and Scholarship is pleased to announce the 2021 East Texas Research Conference (ETRC) will be held virtually on April 15, 2021 from 8:30 am to 12:15 pm. The conference will feature presentations from invited speakers on the Coronavirus Pandemic, Emerging Therapeutics, Health Implications and Challenges. The conference sessions will include a live component in which attendees may pose questions for the presenters. Conference registration is now open and attendance is free.
