Dr. Blake Bextine, associate biology professor at UT Tyler, is participating in the 2013 Cowtown UltraMarathon to raise funds for a UT Tyler scholarship, Dr. Srini Kambhampati, biology department chair, announced.

An endurance athlete, Bextine will once again participate Sunday, Feb. 24 in Fort Worth in support of the Dr. Darrell W. Pogue Memorial Scholarship, benefiting UT Tyler biology majors.

"The Darrell Pogue Scholarship was established in 2007 shortly after Darrell's death following a battle with cancer. Darrell was a tenured faculty member with an active externally funded research lab and was a great advocate for our department. Last year we raised about $2,000. We have elected not to distribute the funds until we reach $10,000, where an endowment will be established, and the scholarship will live forever," Bextine said.

Any pledges he receives for each mile completed during the 31-mile marathon will benefit the student scholarship fund, 100 percent, he added.

This is Bextine's fifth time to participate in the race.
