Dr. Ali Azghani had a recent article in Microbiology published by the international journal of the Society for General Microbiology in London. The article is one of more than 50 collaborative publications with scientists in the United States and Canada. He is an associate professor within the Department of Biology and heavily involved with biomedical research.

Azghani has also been involved in developing novel anti-inflammatory and clot buster drugs. The teams published their recent findings in the American Journal of Physiology, Lung Cell and Molecular Physiology and Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery.

A large quantity of the research reported by Azghani’s lab at UT Tyler has been the work of many undergraduate and graduate students, some of whom are pursuing their careers in medical and dental schools and graduate schools across the country.

“The lab focuses on how microbes injure the lungs in an effort to develop novel effective medicine,” Azghani said. “We have adopted a model opportunistic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa because it is a harmless microbe in nature, but causes fatal infections in individuals with cystic fibrosis and people with weak immune system including AIDS and cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.”
