Dr. Dennis Cali has authored a pioneering book that explores an emerging field in mass communications called media ecology. Cali is professor and chair of The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Communication.

Designed to be used primarily in media and communication courses, "Mapping Media Ecology: Introduction to the Field" hones insight into the role of media in society and to extend the understanding of the themes, processes and interactions of media ecology.

"Media ecology is dedicated to the exploration of the many processes involved when media are added, modified or removed from society," Cali said. "The term 'ecology' does not refer primarily to the 'green' kind; instead, it refers to the social and cultural environment that is created as new technologies are introduced into existing environments."

The University of Texas at Tyler is investigating the possibility of creating a Center for Media Ecology Studies, which would gather faculty from various disciplines to study the interconnections between media, technology, art, culture and consciousness.
