Kathy Kapka has been named 2015-16 chair-elect of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, Dr. James Lumpkin, dean of the College of Business and Technology at The University of Texas at Tyler, announced.

An East Texas CPA and UT Tyler double alumna, Kapka serves as a senior lecturer of accounting in the university’s Department of Accounting, Finance and Business Law. TSCPA’s Committee on Nominations selected Kapka, and she was affirmed by an all-member vote. Her election starts a three-year commitment to serving TSCPA, representing Texas CPAs around the state and country.

“I am excited about representing both the East Texas Chapter TSCPA and UT Tyler as I meet with CPAs and accounting students around the state,” Kapka said. “TSCPA is a dynamic professional organization that works diligently to serve its members by protecting the profession, providing feedback on proposed rules and standards and promoting integrity in the profession. I am honored to serve this organization and its members.”

She joined the UT Tyler faculty in August 2010 with more than 25 years of accounting and auditing experience. She had previously served as the university’s chief audit executive since 1999.

A TSCPA member for 30 years, Kapka has served on the Board of Directors of the East Texas Chapter in several positions, including 2009-10 president. She currently serves on the TSCPA Executive Board, TSCPA Board of Directors, the TSCPA Ethics Committee and the TSCPA Professional Standards Committee, where she served as the 2010-12 chair.

She previously served as the Accounting Principles Committee chair for the Association of College and University Auditors and on the Accounting Principles Council for the National Association of College and University Business Officers.

In 2012, she was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from ACUA and the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award from TSCPA. Kapka also was recognized with the Outstanding Board Member Award and the Outstanding Service to the Profession Award from the East Texas Chapter.

Her teaching interests include financial and managerial accounting, auditing, internal auditing, forensic accounting and ethics.

Kapka holds a bachelor of business administration and a master of business administration, both from UT Tyler.
