The University of Texas at Tyler has established the UT Tyler Council on Service and Service Learning, Dr. William Geiger, vice provost for academic affairs, announced.

The council will hold its inaugural meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 in the UT Tyler University Center Ballroom.

“We, as a university, have been working on creating a culture of service and service learning on campus and within our community. By establishing a council, we hope to create an atmosphere where all stakeholders have a voice,” said Chase Ragland, UT Tyler student development specialist who coordinates leadership and service programs. “Students, faculty, staff and community members will come together to have intentional conversations on the importance of service and service learning not only to our campus, but also to the community at large.”

Community partners include Brookshire Grocery Co., Court Appointed Special Advocates for Kids of East Texas, Hiway 80 Rescue Mission, Longview Regional Medical Center, Trinity Mother Frances and the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce.

The UT Tyler Office of Leadership and Service connects UT Tyler students to service opportunities on campus, in the Tyler/East Texas community and beyond.
