About Esports

In fall 2020, three faculty members at UT Tyler received a grant to conduct research on Esports. Esports is short for electronic sports and transforms online video gaming into a spectator sport. After the launch of the research, the program grew exponentially. In the spring of 2023, the program is now supported by the Department of Student Engagement, Recreational Sports, and the Soules College of Business to accommodate the rapid growth of the program and to continue the success that the faculty started. The UT Tyler Esports program now consists of varsity level teams for Valorant, Smash Ultimate, Rocket League, Overwatch2, League of Legends, and Apex Legends competing in the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) in effort to secure scholarship money and potentially be scouted by professional teams. The program also features Esports Collegiate Management Teams (ECMT), a Content Team, and an Events Team which learn relevant industry knowledge and applicable professional skills as well as a recreational community Discord consisting of 400+ members.
