Civil Engineering

The University of Texas at Tyler

Lab study of fluid mechanicsStudents in The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Civil Engineering develop knowledge and skills on the cutting edge through student-centered undergraduate and graduate education and research. Students may choose to study at our main campus in Tyler, TX, or they may earn a UT Tyler civil engineering bachelor of science through our satellite program in the Houston Engineering Center of Houston Community College.

Civil engineers use complex technology and a strong knowledge base in science, mathematics and engineering to creatively solve society's problems. Civil engineers shape the world we live in, creating the transportation networks we use to deliver goods globally, providing life-sustaining water supply systems, guiding environmental protection and remediation, designing structural supports for soaring bridges and skyscrapers, stabilizing the earth beneath our feet, and directing construction projects from the cradle to completion through the structural, hydrology, transportation, construction, geotechnical, environmental, and surveying disciplines of civil engineering.

With a degree in civil engineering from The University of Texas at Tyler, you will be well prepared to conceptualize, plan, design, construct and operate facilities essential to modern life, from highway exchanges and major bridges to hospitals, airports and launch pads.

Students in UT Tyler's civil engineering bachelor of science degree program engage in basic science and engineering science with an emphasis in engineering design. They are taught and mentored by faculty who are completely student-focused and dedicated to professional excellence. The bachelor of science in civil engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.

UT Tyler offers the master of science degree program in civil engineering with three options:

  • The research option is designed primarily for students who wish to conduct research and expand their knowledge in civil engineering.
  • The professional practice option is intended primarily for students who plan to practice civil engineering at the professional level.
  • The technical and management development option is geared toward practicing engineers who want to enhance their technical skills and develop management skills.

Marketable Skills

Students exit from any degree program with a variety of skills. Marketable skills are those valued by employers that can be applied in a variety of work settings, including interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skill areas. These skills can be either primary or complementary to a major and are acquired by students through education, including curricular, co-curricular, and other non-classroom activities (Texas High Education Coordinating Board, 2015).
