Degree Requirements for BA/BS in Political Science

(Total Semester Credit Hours=120)

  1. University Core Curriculum (42 hours)
  2. A minimum grade of "C" in all political science courses
  3. Twelve semester hours of upper division political science courses must be completed at this university.
  4. A minimum of 36 semester hours in political science, of which 30 must be upper division, as follows:
    • POLS 2305 and 2306: U.S. and Texas Government
    • Political Theory: (3 hrs.) POLS 3360, 3361, 3362, 4353, 4360, 4361 or (when applicable) 4365
    • American Politics: (6 hrs.) POLS 3300, 3330, 3335, 4320, 4330, 4340, 4355, or (when applicable) 4365
    • Comparative Politics: (3 hrs.) POLS 3370, 3372, 3375, 3380, 3385, 3388, 3395, 4325 or (when applicable) 4365
    • International Politics: (3 hrs.) POLS 3310, 3315, 3390, 4305, 4310, 4315, 4316, 4350 or (when applicable) 4365
    • Public Administration and Policy: (3 hrs.) POLS 3340, 3345, 4335, 4345, 4349 or (when applicable) 4365
    • Legal Studies: (3 hrs.) POLS 3321, 3330, 4321, 4322, or (when applicable) 4365
    • Methodology: (3 hrs.) POLS 4396 or SOCI 3396 or equivalent
    • Upper-division political science electives (6 hrs.)

  5. A minor of at least 18 hours, chosen in consultation with an advisor in the minor discipline.

FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE: At least four semesters of a single foreign language or a satisfactory grade on a written examination approved by the foreign language faculty

FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE: Six hours from economics, geography and/or computer science in addition to those otherwise counted as lower-division preparation.
