Message From the Chair

Chair, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences is comprised of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Speech Language Pathology in 2025, and Masters of Occupational Therapy bridge and entry level pathways with doctoral planning in process. The programs in
this department are known for their rapid growth, demand, and clinical educational
opportunities to produce future Occupational and Speech Therapists. The work and impact
made by these professions is felt throughout healthcare and communities throughout
the lifespan. Students who are attracted to the rehabilitation sciences are typically
interested in patient care with a common emphasis on quality of life for their patients
and their caregivers. A Speech Therapist may improve quality of life by working on
swallowing needs and communication skills whereas an Occupational Therapist may improve
quality of life by working on self care skills and motor milestones. Often times,
we co-treat with patients and work closely together on a patient's case. As clinicians,
we work on a variety of treatments to achieve patient goals in a variety of settings
ranging from hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, outpatient clinics,
and home health. I am extremely proud of the hard work of the Program Directors, Faculty,
staff, and students for joining this department, developing the curriculum and clinical
experiences, teaching and meeting student learning needs, and for continuing to advocate
for their profession's distinct value in healthcare and beyond.
