The Center for Biomedical Research
As a university medical center, it’s our mission to serve Northeast Texas and beyond through innovative research. The faculty and staff at The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine's Center for Biomedical Research are advancing healthcare one discovery at a time. The research performed here each day plays a significant role in how diseases are treated and prevented. Our main goal is to continue to be nationally recognized for innovative contributions in biomedical research.
Scientific Areas:
- Lung injury and repair.
- Infectious lung diseases.
- Innate immunity.
- Cell motility and cytoskeletal rearrangement.
- Coagulation and thrombosis
- The physiology of smooth muscle contraction.
- Cancer, including lung and breast cancer.
- Microbiology.
- Scientific discoveries.
A new intervention for the treatment of pleural loculation called single chain urokinase plasminogen activator (scuPA) is being commercialized in anticipation of near-term clinical trial testing through a partnership with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
New and promising intellectual property has been recently issued for protection against severe influenza-related lung disease and acute lung injury as well as pulmonary fibrosis.
Biomedical Research Volunteer and Paid Internship Program
Hands-On Experience in THoracic & Infectious DIsease Research
The Biomedical Research Internship Program provides students hands-on experience with cutting-edge research on pulmonary injury, diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) and nontuberculous (NTM) mycobacteria infections, and microbiology. Interns will gain valuable research experience in microbiology, molecular biology and immunology, mentor with leading scientists and contribute to research understanding host-pathogen interactions, disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic interventions. Interns will also be preparing for future biomedical science careers by engaging in translational research that bridges fundamental science with clinical applications.
We welcome enthusiastic and curious students who are eager to make an impact in the biomedical sciences. If you’re ready to explore real-world research, apply today or contact Dr. Chris Holmquist in the School of Medicine at Christopher.Holmquist@UTTyler.edu.
Requirements:
- Applicants must be 18 years or older
- Prior coursework, such as General Chemistry Lab or Cell Biology Lab, is encouraged but not required.
- Students are to be available from 8-20 hours per week for 8-12 weeks.
Internships will begin during the long summer session and the fall and spring semesters. All experiences are in person and take place at UT Tyler’s research laboratories.
Applicants are required to submit:
- A statement of interest (if applying to the paid internship)
- Research areas of interest
- An official or unofficial transcript
- Availability days/times
- A CV/Resume
Preference for paid internships will be given to applicants who have completed a Biomedical Research Volunteer Experience or Summer Research Clinical Externship with the School of Medicine.
Before selecting an area of interest, applicants need to review the Biomedical Research Faculty page. Statements of interest should include why the applicant is interested in biomedical research, specific areas of interest such as pulmonary disease, microbiology, or infectious diseases as well as their career aspirations. Students should describe how this internship aligns with their academic and professional goals and what they hope to gain from the experience.
Applications are processed as they are received, with completed application deadlines below:
| Semester | Deadline |
| For Summer Internships | Preceding April 1st |
| For Fall Internships | Preceding July 1st |
| For Spring Internships | Preceding December 1st |
