Family Medicine Tyler Residency Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Family Medicine Residency Program at The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine!

Established in 1985 as the first graduate medical education training program in East Texas, our residency has proudly served as the flagship training program of our institution for over four decades. As part of the UT Health East Texas healthcare system, residents have access to a robust network that includes ten hospitals, more than 60 clinics, and a service area encompassing millions of East Texans.

We are particularly proud that approximately 70% of our graduates have chosen to remain in Texas, helping meet the healthcare needs of communities across the state. Many of our faculty members are program alumni themselves, remaining heavily involved in training our next generation of family physicians.

Our program’s mission is to train our physicians in all aspects of family medicine and to develop skills that enable our residents to practice compassionate medicine and become leaders of their communities.

We strive to address health disparities at the population level while maintaining focus on the individual patient. We do this using a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, incorporating behavioral health, pharmacy and dietary services to help take a more holistic approach to the patient in our Family Medicine Clinic.

We are also proud to foster a family-friendly and supportive training environment. Resident well-being, work-life balance, and professional fulfillment are core values of our program, and we intentionally incorporate these principles throughout residency training.

For residents interested in further academic growth, our institution offers opportunities to pursue master's degree programs through the School of Health Professions and other graduate departments while completing residency.

Tyler offers an exceptional quality of life with the amenities of a growing city and the warmth of a close-knit community. Residents enjoy easy access to Tyler State Park, Lake Tyler, Lake Palestine, and Lake Fork, as well as extensive walking and biking trails, outstanding dining and entertainment, the historic Azalea District, affordable housing, and excellent educational options including the University of Texas at Tyler. Tyler is served by Tyler Pounds Regional Airport and has great proximity to the Dallas, Shreveport, and Houston metro areas.

Thank you again for considering our program. We hope you will take a closer look at all we have to offer and consider making The University of Texas at Tyler Family Medicine Residency Program your home for the next three years.
