Critical Care Transport Program

Continuing Nursing Education

The critical care transport program aims to prepare current nurses and paramedics to work in areas such as ground and air ambulances.

The two-semester program offers a combination of didactic and clinical rotations, delivered in a hybrid format. Participants will take part in online lectures, assignments and exams. They will also participate in monthly (three times per semester) in-person skills and simulation training on the UT Tyler campus or UT Tyler Health Science Center in Tyler.

Upon completion, program participants will obtain a completion certification and 80 hours of didactic and 192 hours of clinical rotations.


Clinical Rotations

Program participants are required to complete eight 12-hour shifts per semester. Required clinical rotation sites include:

  • Medical/Trauma ICU
  • Neurology ICU
  • Cardiovascular ICU
  • Emergency Room
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Ground EMS
  • Helicopter EMS


Facilities

Nursing Simulation Center at UT Tyler Academic Campus

Our simulation spaces mirror real-world clinical environments, including ICU, ER, High-risk. Students train with high-fidelity manikins in dynamic scenarios controlled by faculty from nearby control rooms, allowing for real-time adjustments. Each session is recorded for review and reflection in debriefing rooms, supporting skill development and clinical confidence.

Our state-of-the-art Heli-Sim space gives participants the sense of treating critically injured patients from takeoff to landing.

Program Requirements

Registered Nurses

  • Two-year minimum of critical care or emergency nursing experience (primary nursing role at the bedside caring for patients)
  • ALS Certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC) required
  • EMT Certification (Basic or Paramedic) required
  • Professional Certifications as either a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) required
  • Active RN license in Texas required
  • Nurses who hold clinical leadership positions, such as a preceptor or charge nurse, preferred

Paramedics

  • Two-year minimum of recent experience in a 911 system
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, PHTLS or equivalent Trauma Certification required
  • National Registry Paramedic Certification
  • Active Paramedic license in Texas
  • Paramedics who hold clinical leadership positions, such as Field Training Officer (FTO) or a clinical supervisor, preferred


Application Instructions

Acceptance to the CCTP is a highly competitive process. The application process includes an online interview with clinical-based questions. Applicants are reviewed by a panel of experienced clinicians.
