Freshman Assurance Program
The Freshman Assurance Program provides incoming first-year students with a clearly defined pathway towards assurance into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program at The University of Texas at Tyler.
The program is designed to support student success through proactive advising, academic planning, and faculty engagement. All students who successfully complete the Freshman Assurance Program will receive campus placement, although specific campus sites are not guaranteed.
Program Goals
The Freshman Assurance Program seeks to:
- Promote student success leading up to campus placement.
- Increase retention and progression of nursing students.
- Provide clear academic expectations and milestones.
- Foster early engagement with nursing faculty and professional development activities.
- Prepare students to be competitive applicants for admission to campus placement.
Eligibility
Students may be eligible for the Freshman Assurance Program if they:
- Are admitted to UT Tyler as first-time freshmen.
- Declare Nursing as their intended major upon admission to the university.
- Meet all university and School of Nursing campus placement requirements.
- Enroll full-time in fall and spring semesters.
To maintain Freshman Assurance status, students must meet the following requirements:
Student Expectations
- Apply for campus placement with a combined core/pre-requisite GPA of 3.25 or higher.
- Successfully complete prerequisite coursework on the first attempt according to the approved degree plan.
- Enroll in consecutive semesters (fall to spring) without interruption.
- Complete all science and other nursing prerequisite courses at UT Tyler.
- Dual credit completed prior to admission to UT Tyler will be accepted; however, any prerequisite courses still outstanding at the time of admission must be completed at UT Tyler.
- Meet with their nursing advisor regularly to ensure you remain on track.
- Attend one Freshman Assurance Program information session.
- Participate in at least one professional development activity before campus placement.
- Remain in good academic standing with the university.
- Have not been found responsible for any violations of the University Student Code of Conduct.
- Comply with all School of Nursing professionalism standards.
- Demonstrate professional behavior consistent with nursing expectations.
Students who successfully complete all Freshman Assurance Program requirements will receive:
- Priority review of campus placement materials.
- Early notification opportunity when feasible.
- Early onboarding support during the campus placement cycle.
***Freshman Assurance consideration does not supersede general School of Nursing campus placement requirements.
Students complete the Freshman Assurance Program when they:
- Complete all designated nursing requirements.
- Meet established progression standards.
- All other components of the Freshman Assurance Program have been met.
- Apply for campus placement by posted deadline.
- Begin campus placement (Level clinical coursework) in the first term of eligibility in all semesters.
Students who do not meet all the requirements of Freshman Assurance Program are still eligible to apply for campus placement if they meet the general campus placement requirements. Students who choose to delay their campus placement application will no longer have guaranteed admission under the Freshman Assurance Program and will compete for their spot with the entire candidate pool. Students who do not receive campus placement to the BSN program will continue to receive academic advising regarding alternative pathways and future application opportunities.

- Participation in nursing student organizations.
Application Preparation
- Guidance regarding campus placement application requirements.
- Assistance with understanding core course/prerequisite completion timelines.
- Support preparing a competitive campus placement application.
Campus Placement Deadlines:
- Spring Admission - September 15
- Summer Admission - February 15
- Fall Admission - May 22
While Waiting for Placement:
Students are strongly encouraged to gather immunization records and other required documents needed to start nursing school. Failure to upload appropriate documentation within deadlines will delay ability to enroll full-time and participate in clinical experiences.
Applicants names will be submitted to the Board of Nursing (BON). The BON shares email address with IdentoGO. IdentoGO will send an email with instructions regarding fingerprints and background checks. The whole process takes at least 4 weeks, follow instructions carefully.
Upon Placement:
- Pay non-refundable seat deposit of $150.00 by the date indicated in the acceptance letter.
- Failure to pay the deposit will result in forfeiture of the acceptance.
- Applicants who accept an offer of admission but later decide not to attend will forfeit seat deposit.
- Attend BSN Onboarding day (date listed in the acceptance letter)
- Pay for and create a CastleBranch account.

You'll be held to the professional standards of the field, ensuring you're well-prepared academically and personally for the demands of clinical practice.
Once you complete your prerequisites, you'll apply for campus placement to begin your clinical courses. You'll spend your final four semesters in hands-on training at one of our three campuses: Longview, Palestine, or Tyler.
