Biography

Dr. Anne Dearth Maker is a flutist and music teacher based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. A diverse performer, she maintains an active freelance career and has performed with orchestras, musicals, contemporary chamber ensembles, and improvising ensembles around the country. She’s recently performed at the National Flute Association’s 2024 Convention, and presented guest recitals at Adams State University (CO), Arkansas State, and the University of Central Arkansas. Anne particularly enjoys working closely with composers and has premiered multiple works written expressly for her, notably Sapere Aude for flute and electronics by J. Andrew Smith, Whistleblower for solo piccolo by Jesse Maker, Uncreation by Dennis Sullivan, and I spirningstidens stillhet by Kristofer Svensson. She’s also an active chamber musician; her past projects include N/A Ensemble, a flexible instrumentation ensemble focused on experimental repertoire, and she currently plays with AJA Trio, a flute, viola, bass trio that is dedicated to the historical works of the instrumentation while working to develop its repertoire.

Alongside her performance works, Anne is an active teacher. She is faculty at the University of Texas, Tyler and Dallas College Richland and North Lakes, and maintains a private studio in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She also frequently guest teaches and has taught classes on composer-performer collaboration, how to approach 20th century repertoire, and methods to introduce extended techniques and pieces to students.

Anne holds degrees from the University of North Texas, New York University, and the University of Michigan. Her primary teachers were Elizabeth McNutt, Robert Dick, Amy Porter, Sharon Sparrow, and Donna Olkowski.
