How to Apply to The University of Texas at Tyler

Admissions for veterans, active service members and their families is a simple step-by-step process that generally includes an online application, official transcripts and supporting documents. Reach out to our admissions advisers if you have any questions or need additional assistance.

Review Admission Requirements

Before starting the application process, review requirements and deadlines based on your specific situation and previously earned educational credits. As a veteran, service member, or family member, you will likely apply as an incoming first-year, transfer or graduate student.

Apply for Financial Aid

You may be eligible for grants, loans, scholarships and other sources of funding. All military-affiliated students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if they are using a military/veterans education program. There are also scholarships available specifically for military-affiliated students.

Recognitions and Designations for Military-Affiliated Student Support

UT Tyler has been designated as a Silver Military Friendly™ School (2023-24, 2025-26, and 2026-27), as well as a Military Friendly™ Spouse School (2026-27).

The university has also been listed as a Best for Vets College (2014, 2025), and received a 2025 Silver Veterans Education Excellence Award from the Texas Veterans Commission.

From admission through graduation, the Office of Military & Veterans Affairs serves as a central point of contact for military-affiliated students. We provide guidance, connect you with campus resources, and help you navigate the university with confidence.

Military-affiliated students have access to a variety of academic support services, including tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, writing assistance, and study resources.

Prepare for life after graduation through career coaching, résumé reviews, internship opportunities, networking events, and employment resources.

Military & Veterans Education Programs

Military & veterans education programs can feel complex, but you don't have to navigate them alone. MVA partners with multiple campus offices to guide students throughout the certification process and help you understand program requirements, submit required documentation, and remain on track toward graduation.

VA Education Programs

Administered through the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA education programs provide assistance that help eligible students pursue and complete their academic, personal, and professional goals.

Hazlewood Act

The Hazlewood Act is a Texas education program that provides eligible veterans, spouses, and children with a tuition exemption at UT Tyler. MVA can help students navigate the application process to determine their eligibility.

Military Tuition Assistance

Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is offered by each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces to support eligible active duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members in pursuing their educational goals. MVA assists students in understanding UT Tyler's TA procecesses.
