UT Tyler Police Department

Message From the Chief

Thank you for visiting The University of Texas at Tyler Police Department website. This site was developed to assist our community in learning more about us and what we do to service our students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campus. When you visit our web site you will also find that navigation to other law enforcement and criminal justice links are easy to access.

The University of Texas at Tyler is situated on some 295 acres in the southeast section of Tyler, Texas. In addition to the academic programs, with the associated buildings, students, faculty and staff, Ornelas Residence Hall dorm and three apartment complexes, Patriot Village, University Pines, and Eagle's Landing are located on-campus for housing students. Officers and guards also provide services for musical performances, theatrical performances, sports events and many other events throughout each year.

Police Officers with the UT System are required to complete the UT System Police Academy in Austin, Texas. The academy consists of approximately 22 weeks of intense training in all areas of police work, as well as UT System Policies and Procedures and the UT Board of Regents Rules and Regulations.

Officers are responsible for a full range of public safety services, including all crime reports, investigations, medical emergencies, fire emergencies, traffic accidents, enforcement of laws, and regulating underage drinking and the use of controlled substances, weapons violations, and all other incidents requiring police assistance.

In addition, the University Police Department provides a wide range of services for the convenience and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors. Officers routinely provide services such as vehicle jump-starts, unlocks, and personal escorts for those individuals leaving campus buildings at night, when requested.

You can report crimes to the University Police Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by dialing extension 7300 or 903.566.7300 (for non-emergencies) and 911 for emergencies. Trained Police Dispatchers are available 24 hours a day to answer all calls. There is a TDD phone service available 24 hours a day for the hearing impaired. For administrative business, the office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

At the University of Texas at Tyler, safety is a primary consideration in the maintenance, grounds keeping and lighting of the campus. If police officers or security guards should discover a broken window, door lock, or non-functioning light, the Physical Plant Department is notified. Students as well as faculty and staff may call the Physical Plant at extension 7291, or 903.566.7291, to report any safety or security hazard.

The University Police Department also works closely with the office of Student Affairs to ensure that University Rules and Regulations are enforced.

We are a service-oriented police department that proudly supports the mission of The University of Texas at Tyler. Our support is exhibited by the prompt and courteous service that we deliver to our customers. The men and women of our department are here to assist you and we appreciate your visit to our web site.
