Dr. Blake Bextine, an associate biology professor at UT Tyler, is participating in
the 2012 Cowtown UltraMarathon to raise funds for a UT Tyler scholarship.
An endurance athlete, Bextine will participate on Sunday, Feb. 26 in Fort Worth in
support of the Dr. Darrell W. Pogue Memorial Scholarship, benefiting undergraduate
biology students.
“Darrell was my best friend and mentor in the department prior to his 2007 death,
which resulted from a terminal brain tumor. After his death, the family set up this
scholarship for donations in lieu of flowers. Since it is not an endowed scholarship,
I want to keep it going,” said Bextine.
Any pledges he receives for each mile completed during the 31-mile marathon will benefit
the student scholarship fund, 100 percent, he added.
This is Bextine’s fourth time to participate in the race.
