The University of Texas at Tyler Police Department encourages the UT Tyler community
to participate in the 2014 Take Back Initiative, Mike Medders, police chief, announced.
The national initiative, held biannually, allows individuals to safely and conveniently
dispose of their prescription drugs.
"From April 21 – April 26, participants may drop off their unwanted/unused prescription
drugs at the police department, which is located at 3410 Varsity Drive in the UT Tyler
University Service Center, room 125," said Michael Seale, police lieutenant.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, participants may dispose of medication
in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing
of it directly into the disposal box. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should
remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap
is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
Intra-venous solutions, injectibles and syringes will not be accepted due to potential
hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.
