More than 100 UT Tyler freshmen participated in this year’s Freshman Day of Service at the East Texas Food Bank.
The group was the largest to volunteer in the university’s annual program. UT Tyler
contributed to 8,212 total meals, bagging rice/beans, placing labels on unmarked cans
and boxing meals for those in need.
“Tim Butler, volunteer coordinator for ETFB, said this group was the largest volunteer
group the food bank has ever had,” said Chase Ragland, student development specialist
who coordinates leadership and service programs. “It was a huge success and a great
experience for our freshmen to get engaged in helping the community.”
Through volunteerism, students help create solutions to critical challenges in the
community while also building their leadership skills, gaining a broader awareness
of social issues and enhancing their overall collegiate experience.
