Dr. Brent Bill, UT Tyler assistant professor of biology, and students in his Cell Biology 3334 class will lead free, science-based presentations for elementary children on Saturday, June 20 at the Discovery Science Place, a UT Tyler center.

“Summer Science Saturday” presentations are:

  • 10:30 a.m. – Cells: Plants, Animals and Bacteria – Oh My!
  • 11 a.m. – The Big Four: Sugar, Protein, Fat and Nucleic Acid (the macromolecules)
  • 11:30 a.m. – Why Do I Like Sugar So Much? The story about how you get your energy.
  • Noon – Stem Cells: Could cells be used to make me feel better?

“The goal of this service learning project is to engage local children in science, while providing an opportunity for The University of Texas at Tyler students to digest and present topics that they are currently learning in class to the general public,” Bill said.

The presentations are geared towards children in grades 4 – 8, however children of all ages are welcome, he said. Museum admission is not required for attendance to Science Saturday sessions alone. A certificate of attendance will be available for students whose science teachers offer extra credit.
