RICHARDSON – UT Tyler senior Anthony Gonzales has been named the American Southwest Conference
East Division Player of the Week after opening conference play by scoring 27 points
and helping to lead the Patriots to a three-point win over Howard Payne and contributing
12 points in a win over Sul Ross State.
Gonzales scored 23 points in the second half against the Jackets with four second-half
three-pointers and went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line to spark the Patriots (4-1,
2-0 ASC) to the victory. With 12 points, four rebounds and two assists, Gonzales helped
the Patriots to a four-game winning streak with a win over Sul Ross. He is now averaging
19.6 points per game and has been consistent all season with double-figure scoring
performances in each of the first five games.
"Anthony really got going for us in the second half which we desperately needed since
we were not shooting the ball well," said UT Tyler head coach Jamon Copeland after
the win over HPU. "Once he got going, our confidence really increased as a unit."
