Health Alert: Colon Cancer Heightened in Young Adults

Colorectal cancer may not be a common cancer you often hear about, but one study suggests young adults may be getting more and more acquainted with the disease. Research from the MD Anderson Cancer Center says colon cancer is now more prevalent in adults between 20-30 years old than previously seen before. Most people who have it don’t even know due to lack of medical resources, insurance, or acknowledgment of the illness.

Dr. Alexandria Phan, Medical Director for UT Health Cancer Center, says not only is it more intense, but way too common. “It has to do with both genetics, as well as environmental changes, particularly the food that we eat and the exposures that we expose our children to,” says Dr. Phan.

If you want to check and make sure that you have a clean bill of health, The UT Health Science Center will host a free community health fair on Saturday, March 23rd. It’s happening from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The fair will focus on community education and colon cancer prevention.
