As millions of Americans spend another day inside their homes, cabin fever and other concerns about COVID-19 is taking its toll on some people’s mentality.
“One of the main things that causes such anxiety in us is a sense of uncertainty not knowing what comes next or what to do next. So, one way to take control and mastery of the situation is to create a schedule,” noted Dr. Ushimbra Buford, psychiatrist, psychiatry residency program director and assistant professor of medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.
“I would schedule out the time when I’m waking up in the morning–my morning cleaning routine, full preparation; if I have children in school, their schedule for the day in terms of homeschooling. Also schedule leisure time,” explained Dr. Buford. “Plan out when you’re going to read, when you’re going to watch TV, when you’re going to step outside, when you’re going to eat. That will give you something to look forward to and also a sense of knowing what comes next.”
Buford says for those worried about COVID-19, the best thing they can do is follow the advice of medical authorities. “These things we talk about, they’re very simple. Washing your hands, avoid touching your face and eyes, trying to keep yourself distanced from others as much as possible,” Dr. Buford said. “Doing these things is going to help us get through this much faster in a way that won’t overwhelm our healthcare system, which is our main concern right now.”
Additionally, Dr. Buford says the same actions that can boost one’s immune system will also improve mood. “Making your immune system the best it can be by exercising, eating healthy, nutritious foods and getting the proper amount of sleep–those things are not only going to strengthen your body, but they improve your mood,” Dr. Buford added.
