UTHSCT Expands Camp Fannin Walking Trail

April 4, 2019

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UTHSCT) broke ground on Wednesday, March 20th, for phase two expansion of the Camp Fannin Walking Trail. In the Trail’s inception, which officially opened on November 16, 2017, UTHSCT aimed to facilitate their employee wellness initiatives. This gained significant traction among employees towards the trail’s creation. That support led to its initial funding by voluntary employee donations to UTHSCT’s campus beautification fund and the C.A.R.E. fund, as well as money from the UT System Wellness Initiative.

The Trail currently stretches for a quarter-mile loop, scenically around a front portion of the UTHSCT campus. The location provides for easy and secure access and is designed to encourage a convenient way for employees to incorporate exercise into their daily routines. Its use has undoubtedly become a popular pastime for the lunch hour; thus, the expansion is an exciting addition for the campus. The new addition will double the size of the Camp Fannin Walking Trail, extending the loop to a half-mile long. This phase two expansion is primarily funded by the Tobacco Wellness Fund, where resources are given back to the University via premiums collected for tobacco users on health coverage. Completion of the project is anticipated for June 2019.
