The University of Texas at Tyler School of Performing Arts will present concerts featuring summer music camp participants along with this year’s
guest artist Shelley Carrol, a Dallas jazz legend and world-renowned saxophonist.
“The public is invited to free concerts performed during the two weeks of music camps. Each year, it’s incredibly rewarding to welcome talented middle and high school students from all over Texas and special guest artists to our campus,” said Dr. Sarah Roberts, UT Tyler associate professor and School of Performing Arts director. “The energy, creativity and passion they bring to the music is inspiring, and it’s an honor to help foster the next generation of jazz musicians right here in East Texas.”
Carrol will perform with UT Tyler Jazz Camp faculty at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. A protégé of the great tenor saxophonist, Marchel Ivery, Carrol currently teaches part-time at West Mesquite High School, offers clinics and regularly performs at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Honored as the 2007 Sammons Jazz Artist of the Year, he also plays with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Sheryl Crow, and others, and takes his own quartet to Japan and Europe.
