ACS Citation Style Guide (American Chemical Society)

Overview

ACS style is used in chemistry and related fields. It allows three citation methods: (1) superscript numbers, (2) italic numbers in parentheses, and (3) author-date format. Use one method consistently.

In-Text Citations

  • Superscript Numbers: The reaction yielded significant results.¹
  • Italic Numbers in Parentheses: The reaction yielded significant results (1).
  • Author-Date: The reaction yielded significant results (Smith, 2020).

References

Listed at the end of the document, formatted per the chosen in-text citation method.
