Communication Sciences and Disorders

Are you ready for a career that makes a difference?

Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is an umbrella term that includes professions in speech, language, and hearing sciences. Students who obtain a Bachelor of Science in CSD can look forward to multiple Pathways to Employment as well as pursuit of graduate study.

After obtaining your Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, you can enjoy the flexibility of working with patients of all ages, with multiple disorders, in a variety of settings. No job is quite as flexible as one in speech, language, and hearing.

Students in the CSD program can expect to gain a comprehensive education introducing them to normal and disordered processes of human communication, speech, language, hearing, and swallowing.

Watch as your passion, education, and dedication bring you to a career that allows you to make a real difference in peoples’ lives.

PATHWAYS TO EMPLOYMENT

In Person or Online Options

Beginning in Fall of 2026, UT Tyler’s Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders will offer two pathways to degree completion: 100% synchronous online or 100% in person.

Students who apply for the BS in CSD will choose either an online or in-person degree plan. Students may not switch between taking online and in-person CSD courses.

The online degree plan takes place fully live, in real time. This means that courses are not recorded and completed asynchronously. Rather, students participate in the in-person experience from a distance.

This fully live, immersive, synchronous online pathway offers students to experience our high-quality learning environment, participating in class discussions and asking questions of instructors in real time from a distance.

This pathway is ideal for prospective students who wish to have an “in person experience” but may not be able to be physically present here on our beautiful campus in Tyler.

This pathway is not ideal for students looking to complete their degree asynchronously or in an accelerated timeline. Courses that students take and the semesters in which they take them will depend upon the in-person course offerings.

Students should consider themselves “live via distance”. This means students are expected to participate in their courses just like they would if they were physically present.

Instructors can expect that students’ cameras are on and their microphones are available.

Students can expect instructors to treat them as though they are in person, calling on them if their hands are raised, answering their questions in real time, and including them in class discussions.

Students in this program will be immersed in our high-quality learning environments without any barriers.
