Communication Sciences and Disorders

Choose a Career that Makes a Difference

Communication Sciences and Disorders is an umbrella term that includes professions in speech, language, and hearing sciences. The B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders is a preprofessional degree that primarily prepares students to pursue a master’s degree in speech-language pathology or audiology, work as speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs), or pursue related careers including healthcare, education, and early intervention.

Students who obtain a Bachelor of Science in CSD can look forward to multiple pathways to employment as well as pursuit of graduate study. With your Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, you can enjoy the flexibility of working with patients of all ages, with multiple disorders, in a variety of settings. No job is quite as flexible as one in speech, language, and hearing.

Students in the CSD program can expect to gain a comprehensive education introducing them to normal and disordered processes of human communication, speech, language, hearing, and swallowing. Watch as your passion, education, and dedication bring you to a career that allows you to make a real difference in peoples’ lives.

Applications for the fall 2025 student cohort are being accepted. The deadline is March 7, 2025.

Students who graduate with their BS in CSD are prepared to begin working as an SLPA, Audiology Assistant, or Hearing Instrumentation Specialist. As part of their degree plan, students obtain 25 observation hours required to begin working as an SLPA or to apply to graduate school to become an SLP. Additionally, students can earn up to 25 experience hours required to begin working as an SLPA.

UT Tyler’s CSD faculty and staff are passionate about our professions. There’s a reason we want to educate “the next generation”. Consider your faculty and staff not just as “instructors” who come and go, but mentors who are with you for the duration of your program. We love watching our students grow and develop, and stay in touch long after our Patriots fly the coop.

Undergraduates have multiple opportunities to participate in research both in and out of their classes. Students who complete research projects can present at local, state, and national conferences.

Use your knowledge for good. Undergraduate students have multiple opportunities to serve East Texas through innovative faculty and clinic initiatives like “Pop Up Preschool”, hearing screenings, head-start programs, and many others.
