Comprehensive Clinical Training
Residents train throughout the UT Health East Texas system, which includes ten hospitals and more than 60 clinics serving both urban and rural communities. This breadth of exposure provides a unique opportunity to care for patients across the full spectrum of family medicine.
Our primary training site, UT Health Tyler North Campus, features a busy emergency department where residents take an active role in evaluating patients, managing acute illness and injury, and performing procedures under faculty supervision. Additional training at the system's flagship Level I Trauma Center exposes residents to high-acuity patients and multidisciplinary care alongside a wide range of specialists.
Together, these experiences equip graduates with the confidence and skills to manage both outpatient and inpatient care and to perform a broad range of emergency and hospital-based procedures.
Designed with Work-Life Balance in Mind
We believe outstanding physicians develop in an environment that values both professional growth and personal well-being. Our curriculum is designed to provide rigorous, hands-on clinical training while fostering the balance and resilience needed for a successful career in medicine.
Residents care for patients across a wide range of clinical settings, gaining progressive responsibility and autonomy throughout training. By graduation, they are prepared to confidently manage the diverse challenges of modern family medicine in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
Residents also benefit from six elective blocks, allowing them to tailor their training to their career goals and explore areas of special interest. During their second and third years, moonlighting opportunities may be available with program director approval, providing additional clinical experience and professional development.
The result is a comprehensive yet flexible training experience that enables residents to grow throughout residency while developing into confident, well-rounded family physicians prepared to sustainably serve their patients and communities in a variety of practice settings.
Life in Tyler
Beyond clinical experience, residents benefit from a strong sense of community. Many of our residents are raising young families and have established lasting friendships and support networks both within the program and throughout East Texas. Informal resident gatherings, family-friendly activities, and a vibrant local community with numerous churches, schools, and recreational opportunities help make Tyler an excellent place to live and train.
Family Medicine Tracks
Our Family Medicine Tracks allow residents to develop advanced expertise in focused areas while maintaining the broad training and versatility that define family medicine.
Sports Medicine Track: Residents participate in longitudinal sports medicine experiences throughout residency while using elective time to further enhance their training. Working alongside sports medicine faculty, orthopedic surgeons, and athletic trainers, residents provide medical coverage for local athletic programs, including Friday night football games and Saturday morning injury clinics. Residents in the track also deliver sports medicine-focused didactic presentations and maintain active membership in a professional sports medicine organization. Our Sports Medicine Track graduates have an excellent record of matching into competitive Sports Medicine fellowships.
Emergency Medicine Track: Residents will utilize elective time and, in a longitudinal format, provide care in various emergency department settings, including a Level I Emergency Department and trauma center. Residents will present didactic topics related to emergency medicine.
Obesity and Metabolic Health Track: Residents will utilize elective time and, in a longitudinal format, work in the weight management clinic to learn about aspects of treating obesity and obesity-related health issues. Residents will present didactic topics related to emergency medicine and complete an academic project. Residents will also be expected to join an accepted member organization devoted to obesity medicine. Preparation will ensure readiness to take the American Board of Obesity Medicine certification examination.
Hospice and Palliative Medicine Track: Residents will utilize elective time and work with our hospice and palliative medicine physicians to learn about the many aspects of alleviating pain and end-of-life care. Residents will present didactic topics related to hospice and palliative medicine and complete an academic project. Residents will also be expected to join an accepted member organization devoted to this area of medicine. This experience will be especially valuable for those residents interested in pursuing a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine.
