Biography

Dr. Premananda Indic is a Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler. He joined the department as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2016, was promoted to Associate Professor in Fall 2021, and achieved the rank of full Professor in Fall 2024.

Dr. Indic received his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Technology at the Cochin University of Science and Technology, India, in 2001. He holds an M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering and a B.Tech. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, both from the University of Calicut, India. He completed postdoctoral training in medicine at Harvard Medical School in 2004. Before joining UT Tyler, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

In addition to his academic role, Dr. Indic is the Director of the Center for Health Informatics & Analytics (CHIA), where his research group focuses on developing wearable sensor systems and machine learning algorithms to predict life-threatening events in humans. Current CHIA research initiatives include:

  • Developing wearable sensors to detect cravings in individuals with substance use disorder
  • Detecting suicidal ideation in individuals with mental health conditions
  • Predicting critical health events such as apnea, bradycardia, and hypoxia in preterm infants

Dr. Indic currently serves as a co-investigator and site Principal Investigator on three National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grants. He has also served as Principal Investigator for the Analytical Core of an NIH U01 grant, led an NIH SBIR grant, and was a Co-Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation training grant. Additionally, he contributed as a co-investigator on a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs grant focused on developing algorithms to detect suicidal ideation in military veterans.

Dr. Indic is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
