Vision, Mission, & Goals

Center Vision

To position the K-16 Literacy Center as a place where literacy is a valued right and where everyone can become literate and participate more fully in society.

Center Mission

To improve the quality of life of children and adults through literacy by engaging in literacy research, teaching, and service activities aimed at strengthening instruction and improving literacy achievement outcomes within the university, local area schools, and the East Texas community.

Center Goals

  1. To prepare highly qualified reading professionals to serve in roles as classroom teachers, reading specialists, and master reading teachers in K-12 settings.
  2. To provide schools and community agencies with professional development support aimed at strengthening instructional practices in K-12 settings.
  3. To support schools and community agencies in providing evidence-based early language literacy interventions aimed at preventing reading problems among Pre-K-3 children.
  4. To support schools and community agencies in providing evidence-based literacy interventions aimed at improving reading achievement outcomes in K-16 settings.
