Getting Started with Your Education Program

Information for new military affiliated students at UT Tyler

The Office of Military & Veterans Affairs provides expert support in two key areas: VA enrollment certification and Hazlewood Act eligibility determination. Questions regarding financial information are handled by Financial Aid and Scholarships or Student Business Services

By focusing on these essential functions, we ensure accurate, timely processing of your education benefits while connecting you with the campus resources that support your overall success. Our goal is simple: make navigating your benefits clear and dependable so you can stay focused on your academic and professional goals at UT Tyler.

  • The Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 requires educational institutions to make certain disclosures to students using federal military and/or VA educational benefits. You can access a personalized data sheet by visiting the THECB Net Price Calculator and selecting The University of Texas at Tyler. Additional financial information can be found at the NCES College Navigator site.

  • Students using Post-9/11 benefits are initially certified without tuition and fees. Tuition and fees are sent to the VA approximately one (1) month after the start of the fifteen week session term start date.

  • Federal law requires that a tuition deferment be placed on students using Chapter 31 benefits, as well as those those using Chapter 33 benefits at the 100% level, once the student's certification request has been received. This hold defers your tuition for up to sixty (60) days from the first class day of the 15 week term. Students using other VA benefits, as well as the Hazlewood benefit, have the option of requesting a tuition deferment as required by state law.

  • Tuition and fee information can be found online. Military affiliated students are generally subject to the same tuition policies as other students at UT Tyler. Please contact Financial Aid for more specific information.

  • Release of Student Information: MVA cannot release any information that is a part of a student's educational record-including education program information-to parents, guardians, or other interested parties without the specific permission of the student. Additional information on these guidelines can be found online

Getting Started

Following the steps below will ensure that your enrollment and education program are aligned without delay. Please note that our office does not accept paper or emailed documents.

How Do I Get Started?

In order to access required systems, you must be fully admitted to the university before starting the certification request process.

All military-affiliated students must complete ONE of the following: New Patriot/Transfer Orientation OR Graduate Student Orientation. Students attending New Patriot or Transfer Orientation will register for classes during these orientations.

Once you've completed your orientation, email BOTH proof of completion AND a copy of your class schedule to military@uttyler.edu.

This orientation will provide you information on MVA's role in your educational journey.

Once you've emailed your class schedule AND proof of completed orientation, we will send you instructions on accessing the MVA Canvas site.

The certification request allows you to request an enrollment certification or eligibility determination for Hazlewood. It is submitted once per academic year, and confirms your enrollment/eligibility for the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

You'll complete your ACR through Canvas after completing the Military-Affiliated Student Orientation.

After completing your ACR, you'll receive an email with next steps, including submitting any required documents.
