Military-Affiliated Student Resources & Policies

If your military obligations affect your ability to attend class or complete coursework, contact MVA at military@uttyler.eduas soon as possible.Depending on the length and nature of your military service, you may qualify for either an excused absence or a military withdrawal.

UT Tyler recognizes that military training, education, and experience may be eligible for academic credit when they align with university learning outcomes and degree requirements.

Military transcripts, including the Joint Services Transcript (JST) and Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript, are evaluated through a collaborative process involving the Registrar's Office, academic advisors, academic departments, and MVA. Credit is awarded based on university academic standards and the applicability of military learning to the student's degree program.

In addition, eligible U.S. military veterans may qualify for up to 12 undergraduate elective credit hours by completing the Military Service Credit Agreement with their academic advisor. 

Students who leave UT Tyler to perform military service may be eligible for readmission under federal law and university policy. Eligible students who meet applicable requirements are generally readmitted with the same academic status they held when they left the university.

Affected students should contact MVA and the Registrar's Office as early as possible before returning to ensure all required documentation is submitted and to facilitate a smooth transition back to campus.

The Military-Affiliated Student Orientation is required for all veterans, active duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, as well as military spouses and dependents attending UT Tyler, regardless of whether they are using a VA education program, Hazlewood, or military Tuition Assistance (TA).

The orientation introduces students to university resources, academic expectations, campus policies, and support services designed to help them successfully transition to and thrive at UT Tyler.

New freshman students complete the Military-Affiliated Student Orientation during New Patriot Orientation. Transfer and graduate students who do not attend New Patriot Orientation will complete the orientation online.

Students should complete the orientation as early as possible to ensure they are connected with the resources and support available throughout their time at UT Tyler.

MVA is committed to helping military-affiliated students overcome challenges and remain on track toward graduation. Students experiencing academic difficulty, returning after an extended absence, or navigating personal or military-related challenges are encouraged to connect with MVA early. Our staff works collaboratively with academic advisors and campus partners to identify resources, develop success strategies, and connect students with the support they need.

Military-affiliated students placed on academic probation are required to meet with MVA before certification of VA education programs, Hazlewood, or Tuition Assistance (TA) can continue. This meeting focuses on identifying barriers to success, developing an academic improvement plan, and connecting students with campus resources to promote persistence and academic achievement.

Student education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law that safeguards the privacy of student information. As a result, MVA and other university offices may only discuss a student's education records, account, or military-related information with the student unless the student has provided written authorization permitting the university to speak with another individual.

Parents, spouses, and family members play an important role in supporting military-affiliated students, and MVA is happy to explain general university processes and available resources. However, specific information about a student's records, enrollment, or education program can only be shared with authorized individuals in accordance with FERPA. Students who wish to grant access to another person should complete the appropriate university authorization process.
