The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) at UT Tyler
NSLS is a national student organization that has a chapter on UT Tyler's campus. Students are selected by their college for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. With more than 800 chapters, NSLS currently has over 2 million members nationwide.
NSLS provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation at their campus or online. Upon completion of the program, members receive their leadership certificate and take their place among the top student leaders at their campus and across the country. Members are able to list their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishment, including their resume.
Membership is for life and provides access to benefits including scholarships and awards, on-campus events, employer recruitment through an online job bank, and discounts on computers, textbooks, and grad school prep courses.

I got an invitation to join; is this real or a scam?
It is real! The National Society of Leadership and Success is a national organization that has a chapter on UT Tyler’s campus. Students that meet membership requirements such as GPA are invited to join!
How did I get nominated?
All current UT Tyler students will a 2.5 GPA or higher are invited each semester based on the list of currently enrolled students.
What is it?
If you join NSLS, you will go through 4 steps and then induction. These steps are meant to help you gain knowledge about leadership and network with other students.
How do I get inducted? What are the 4 steps?
- Orientation: The first meeting that occurs each semester and will give you access to all the information you need about the program to successfully complete the Steps to Induction.
- Leadership Training Day: A three-hour interactive video training session with a workbook designed to help you identify and overcome any obstacles that may interfere with obtaining your goals. This introspective seminar helps you recognize your strengths and weaknesses to shift your focus toward your real passions.
- Three speaker broadcast events: You will watch some of the world's most successful motivational speakers discussing topics related to leadership, identifying goals, facing challenges, personal growth, and successfully transitioning from college to career.
- Three Success Networking Team (SNT) meetings: Bring together groups of students that work together and provide peer coaching on achieving goals. You can discuss goals, desires and expectations, set timelines, and hold each other accountable for achieving what you want. The Success Networking Team provides members with a support network of other goal-oriented students on campus.
- Final step: Induction: Once you complete these steps, you will be invited to an induction ceremony.
How much of a time commitment is it?
Usually, students finish the steps above over 8 - 10 hours total spread out over a school year. Everything can be completed at your own pace.
Is it free?
No, there is a one-time membership fee to join. The fee includes access to resources and the member portal. The amount will depend on what you choose to add.
Is there a scholarship or discount on the membership fee?
No there is not a discount on the fee. It must be paid all at one time.
How do I join?
Go to https://www.nsls.org/ and type in the code you received.
How do I know when events are and where they are?
It will all be displayed in your member portal and calendar once you join. You can also go to the Patriots Engage page.
Great, I got inducted. How do I get my induction kit?
Your induction kit will be mailed to you. It can take 2 - 3 weeks; it is not instant after you finish the steps.
Do I get cords at graduation?
If you order them and pay for them, yes! Check out the NSLS shop.
Do I have to purchase the graduation cords now or can I wait?
You can wait until you are ready to purchase.
I am an online student, can I participate?
Yes, there is always a virtual option that you can access on your portal.
I can’t go to an event, or I missed an event; can I make it up?
Yes, there is always a make-up option on your portal that you can complete on your own!
I joined at a different school. Can I transfer my membership?
Yes, email support@nsls.org and tell them your name, where your membership was, and where you are wanting to transfer it to
Can my family come to any of these events?
Families are only welcome at induction. The other events are only open to members.
How likely am I to get a scholarship?
All scholarships go through the national office, so UT Tyler does not have access to this information. Email support@nsls.org with questions about scholarships.
I can’t join this semester, can I wait?
Yes!
Is there a deadline to complete the steps?
No, we encourage you to try to do it within an academic year, but you can take breaks or go at your own pace.
I already joined, but I keep getting emails telling me to join.
This is usually because you have registered with a different email address such as a personal email address.
